Our client is seeking a Director Medical Content Development with clinical experience providing operational leadership for the development, launch and distribution of content for online learning courses that keep physicians current on both evidence-based and emerging medicine topics in their specialty areas. The director will oversee the creation of content assets in many online formats for both web and mobile environments.

The director collaborates with the Director of Learning, Vice President of Product Development and Chief Learning Officer in setting project goals, timelines and objectives, supervising of project operations, assisting with defining measurable and actionable metrics, and developing strong relationships with our editorial board and contributing faculty. The Director Medical Content Development leads, mentors and manages an in-house team of Clinical Editors and acts as the internal expert building a team of Medical Writers, Clinical Editors, Instructional Designers and external Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to plan and develop content from conception to completion according to best practices in instructional design.

The director will also be responsible for creation of content or other direct delivery responsibilities. The ideal candidate is a confident communicator and solution developer, with the experience and motivation to develop engaging learning programs and the ability to recruit and manage academic thought leaders. This position enables you to take a leadership role in designing high-quality clinical education programs that impact patient care and to be part of an innovative start-up in the post-graduate medical education space.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and provide clinical leadership for the development of online educational content for physicians in both evidence-based and emerging medicine topics
  • Develop and cultivate strong relationships with thought leaders, investigators and key opinion leaders
  • Onboard new, and coach existing, content team members to maximize their talents and assignments
  • Develop the strategy, approach, and format ensuring all online content is developed on time in line with organizational strategic goals, medical guidelines and trends, and accreditation standards
  • Analyze business processes and ensures that functional and technical requirements are validated and documented through standard operating procedures, process charts, project charters and project plans
  • Review editorial and clinical content of learning projects for accuracy and relevance
  • Assist in developing needs analyses, learning curriculums, and strategic training initiatives based on principles of adult learning
  • Manage internally and externally written content to ensure that it meets quality standards and is in alignment with customer expectations and medical, legal and regulatory requirements
  • Provide timely, consistent and constructive feedback to section editors, faculty, writers and other contributors ensuring appropriate syntax, style, and content flow for different product types and target audiences, amending or rewriting content as needed
  • Direct content development through appropriate review and workflow processes ensuring on-time delivery and content quality
  • Assist in commissioning and contracting thought leader authors and editors, as needed
  • Provide clinical insight into the build of granular content designs, together with an instructional designer – i.e. determining how related content should be clustered together and in what format content should best be delivered
  • Provide cross-departmental medical support and expertise for all appropriate initiatives, including investor, partner and client presentations, business strategy market research and analytics
  • Identify and implement content development and other process improvements in collaboration with product development and other content and learning colleagues
  • Proactively stay informed of regulatory requirements, guidelines and current trends through familiarity with relevant recent literature and regular attendance of national and select regional medical congresses
  • Ensure active communications within and across teams establishing strong relationships and agility to re-prioritize assignments as needed

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Master degree (MSN, MS, MPH, MEd, or relevant field); preferred advanced degree (e.g. MD, PharmD, NP, PhD, DNP)
  • 5+ years of experience in the design and development of continuing medical or clinical education activities for healthcare professionals, preferably including technology-enabled online learning
  • Creative in developing user-centric and interactive medical content
  • Possesses excellent project management and organizational skills and a strong attention to detail
  • Strong and up-to-date general knowledge in the medical sciences
  • Proficiency with MS Word, PowerPoint, Articulate Storyline, and standard project management software

Preferred Skills:

  • Understands ACCME and ABIM accreditation standards and thinks creatively on how to best meet them
  • Understands the ABMS and ACGME competencies as a framework to plan medical content development requirements
  • Accepts criticism constructively from multiple sources (i.e., internally and externally from clients and partners), maintaining an objective and professional attitude at all times
  • Acts decisively making use of analysis, experience and judgement in a timely manner

  • Periodic travel to support project needs (live board courses, meetings with SMEs, etc.) may be required from time to time
